A pugnacious second-innings knock of 123 by opening batsman Rajesh Dhuper went in vain as Odisha suffered an innings and 59-run defeat against host Hyderabad on the penultimate day of their four-day Col C K Nayudu Trophy U-23 Plate Group-B match at Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad today.
Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 254 runs, Odisha made 195 in the second innings before being all out in 64 over. After reaching 112 for one, Odisha made a meek surrender, losing nine wickets for 82 runs. Dhuper waged a lone battle, hitting 14 boundaries and five sixes in his 188-ball defiant knock.
Earlier, in reply to a massive first-innings total of 428 by Hyderabad, Odisha folded up for 174 after resuming at the overnight score of 85 for six. Satyajit Sabat was Odisha’s top-scorer in the first innings, making 46. Among others, Debabrata Pradhan and Pappu Roy made useful contributions of 27 and 26 not out respectively.
Hyderabad gathered seven points for the innings victory, while Odisha drew blank. With three points from four matches, Odisha retained their place at the bottom of the table and will play their fifth and last league match against Jharkhand at Bokaro from November 11 to 14.
In the only innings of Hyderabad, Tanay Thyagarajan was the top scorer with an unbeaten 152. G Shashidhar Reddy and Chandan Sahani slammed a half-century each. Preet Kanwar Singh Chohan was most successful Odisha bowler, capturing four wickets, while Debabrata Pradhan picked up a brace.
